From Holy Trinity to Lichfield: One Rider’s Journey Through Faith, History, and Thunderstorms

This September’s Ride + Stride event, hosted by the Staffordshire Historic Churches Trust, saw cyclists, walkers, and wanderers crisscross the county in support of preserving our cherished places of worship. Among them was Richard, who took on a personal challenge that turned into a day of discovery, community, and a touch of drama from the skies.

Richard Howell set off from Holy Trinity in Newcastle-under-Lyme with a bold goal: to cycle 60 miles - all the way to Lichfield Cathedral and back—a feat that far exceeded his previous 10-mile limit. “It was certainly a challenge,” he admitted, but one he embraced with determination and a sense of adventure.

Weathering the Ride

The day began with promising skies, and for the most part, the weather held up. But as Richard pedaled back near Stone, nature had other plans. A brief thunderstorm swept through, adding a dramatic twist to an already ambitious ride. “It was mostly nice weather apart from that,” he said.

A Cathedral First

Lichfield Cathedral was a highlight—not just as a destination, but as a revelation. “I’ve never been before,” Richard shared, “and it’s a very interesting place, full of history.” 

Warm Welcomes Along the Way

Richard didn’t just race past the churches on his route—he made time to stop and connect. Saint Michael’s in Brereton, Rugeley, and Saint Andrew’s in Weston near Stafford opened their doors with warmth and hospitality. “They were very welcoming, offering tea and biscuits,” he said. “Only wish I had time to visit more!”
