  1. Vision

The Synod, 2021 - 2028

Pope Francis formally opened the Synod in Rome in October 2021. The overall theme is ‘For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission’.

The Synod of Bishops on Synodality took place in two sessions: in October 2023 and October 2024.

The second session of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod took place in Rome from 2 – 27 October 2024.

Synod 2025-2028

On 11 March 2025, Pope Francis approved the start of a process of accompaniment and evaluation of the implementation phase of the Synod. This is envisaged to be a three-year journey leading to the celebration of the ecclesial assembly in October 2028. This journey will be structured in such a way to offer adequate and sustainable times for the implementation of the Synod’s indications, while also providing for some significant moments of evaluation.

Archbishop Bernard has reappointed Canon Paul Fitzpatrick as Synodal Lead for the Archdiocese for a further three-year term. Canon Paul will lead the implementation phase of the Synod across the Archdiocese. Canon Paul said:

"I am delighted to be able to continue to build on the firm foundations we have put in place over the last three years; especially at this moment when the Church moves from learning about Synodality, into its full implementation.

"Co-responsibility and our Diocesan Vision have always been an integral part of the implementation of Synodality across our Archdiocese. We have sought to plant Co-responsibility and our Diocesan Vision in every Parish and Deanery within the Archdiocese. The implementation phase of the Synod will give us all even greater impetus to take this good work even further."

‘Take outs’ resource launched to complement Synod’s Final Document

A simple and accessible ‘take-outs’ resource has been published to help Catholics engage with the Synod on Synodality’s Final Document.

Produced by the Diocese of Westminster, the resource is particularly useful ahead of the ‘Implementation Phase’ that Pope Francis has recently commissioned the Church to move into as we journey to the celebration of an ecclesial assembly in the Vatican in October 2028.

The resource is titled: How to be a Synodal Church in Mission. Take-outs from the Final Document: ‘An Informal Reaping of the Fruits’.

Adsumus Prayer for the Synod

We stand before You, Holy Spirit,
as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us,
make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go
and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful;
do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path
nor partiality influence our actions.
Let us find in You our unity
so that we may journey together to eternal life
and not stray from the way of truth
and what is right.
All this we ask of You,
who are at work in every place and time,
in the communion of the Father and the Son,
forever and ever. Amen
