Latest News Birmingham primary school prepares to throw open its doors as a homeless shelter over Christmas For the last 3 years St Catherine of Siena Primary School has been used as a shelter for the homeless over the Christmas period. The school partnered with Birmingham Christmas Shelter in 2022, when the Shelter lost its previous accommodation. Every year the Shelter runs a Christmas project, welcoming homeless people off the streets providing food, health care, temporary accommodation and entertainment for over 100 people. Head teacher Tom Minchin said:St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School is delighted to announce the success of our Advent initiative to support the Birmingham Christmas Shelter. Over the past three weeks, our school community has come together with generosity and compassion to collect essential items for this vital cause. This initiative has been a collaborative effort, drawing contributions not only from our wonderful parents, children, and families but also from the wider community. Partnering with the parish of St John Fisher, Father Srinu and neighbouring schools, including St John Fisher School, St James’, St Alban’s, St Edward’s, and St Mary’s, as well as a Birmingham City FC Supporter’s Club, we have ensured that our collection reaches as many homeless and vulnerable individuals as possible during the Christmas season. Our commitment to the Birmingham Christmas Shelter extends beyond donations. For the third consecutive year, our school premises will host the Shelter’s activities over the Christmas holidays. This partnership enables the Shelter to provide meals, shelter, entertainment, and companionship to those in need, ensuring no one feels alone or unsupported during this special time of year. We are also deeply grateful to ITV Central News for visiting our school, speaking with pupils and staff, and showcasing the incredible work that has taken place. Their feature on regional news has highlighted the collective efforts of our community and the importance of this cause, helping to spread awareness and inspire others to get involved. As a Catholic school, our mission is rooted in the teachings of Christ, emphasising love, service, and care for the most vulnerable. This project embodies our core values, and it was with these principles in mind that our governors and senior leaders made the decision to open our doors to the Birmingham Christmas Shelter three years ago. This initiative is a living expression of our faith, and it demonstrates our commitment to serving others, especially those who are most in need. The outpouring of generosity from our school and wider community has been truly inspiring. Looking ahead, we are excited to see how our partnership with the Birmingham Christmas Shelter will grow. Each year, the scale of our collections has increased, and we are already planning how we can make an even greater impact in the future. On behalf of St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this year’s collection. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most, living out our Catholic mission and spreading the true spirit of Christmas.
