By Fr Biju Antony SCJ, Parish Priest and Superior

Olton Friary Church, dedicated to the Holy Ghost and Mary Immaculate, recently marked the centenary of the laying of its foundation stone with a joyful and inspiring series of celebrations.

The occasion was especially meaningful as it coincided with Good Shepherd Sunday and the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi.

The celebrations brought together parishioners, clergy, schools and the wider community over several days of prayer, remembrance and fellowship.

A Thanksgiving Mass was celebrated by Fr John Cavanagh OFM Cap, Fr Wilfred Regional Superior SCJ, joined by fellow priests. The church was beautifully prepared with floral decorations and a photo display capturing parish life over recent years. A short presentation on the history of the Friary helped everyone reflect on its rich heritage and a booklet was researched and produced by Sarah Welsh.

The children played a significant role throughout the celebrations with the support of our local schools, Our Lady of Compassion and St Peter’s. They took part in the liturgy through singing, readings, and a creative presentation of the history of the Friary. Their joy and energy added greatly to the spirit of the occasion; the combined choirs also lifted the celebrations with their inspiring music.

A special highlight was the Sunday celebration, 26 April, when Archbishop Bernard Longley was the main Celebrant at both the 9am and 11am Mass. During his Homily he reflected on the call to serve one another, especially fitting for Good Shepherd Sunday. The foundation stone was blessed again, and a commemorative tree was planted by Fr Wilfred, Regional Superior SCJ, symbolising growth and hope for the future.

The presence of local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Annette McKenzie, and local MP, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, was a wonderful witness to our celebration. The local community gathered in large numbers showing the strong bond between the parish and the local community.

The celebrations including a parish quiz organised by the fundraising committee, as well as guided tours of the Friary, and were attended by many visitors interested in its history and mission.

Throughout the celebrations there was a deep sense of gratitude - for the past, for the present community and for the future. The event concluded with prayer, fellowship and shared refreshments, bringing people together in a spirit of unity and joy.

The centenary celebrations were a beautiful reminder of faith, community and service, and a hopeful step forward for the life of the parish.
