This last weekend saw the Knights of St Columba, Charter Council 93 Coventry, celebrate 100 years service to this great Order.

We give thanks to His Grace Archbishop Bernard Longley who celebrated the Mass on Friday 10 January at Christ the King.

Our thanks also go to our worthy Supreme Knight Brother Michael Akinrele, Provincial Grand Knight Brother James Northey and Council 93 Grand Knight Brother Peter Sturgeon for attending the celebration.

Following Mass there was a buffet in the Parish Centre.

The Order of the Knights of St Columba was formed back in 1919 in Glasgow by six working men, at that time they had the vision of helping those men who had served in the First World War, coming back home to settle back into family life. They had not realised the great need that not only existed in Glasgow but also the whole of the country.

Within the first six years of forming the order in the Name of St Columba it had reached down as far as London.

The Order has its head office in Glasgow still to this day. Then within the various dioceses through the country there are provincial councils which then form within parishes charter councils, of which Council 93 is one of them.

The Order works within each parish to help support the parish with the social teaching of the Catholic faith. In today’s world of poverty, war, famine and homelessness the Order aims to sponsor a charity for a period of 12 months with fundraising as a help to provide for the charity given.

Charter Council 93 Coventry over the years have been very successful in helping and providing sponsorship to the given yearly charity. They hold garden parties, race nights and barn dances just to name a few.

Charter Council 93 meet at Christ the King Parish on the 3rd Monday of every month. All men over the age of 16 are most welcome to come and see if this worthy order would be something they would like to get involved with.
