Children at a Coventry primary school have helped prepare hot meals for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness over the festive season.

Pupils at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, part of the Romero Catholic Academy, have helped deliver a festive show of support to Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire by working with staff to create a range of dishes for people in need this winter.

It is the third year in a row the school on Harry Rose Road has supported the charity to help provide lunches for the people it supports, with Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire Director Falishia Channer on hand to speak to pupils and see their catering skills in action.

Children in Years 5 and 6 helped make vegetable soup, while Years 3 and 4 made sausage rolls with Years 1 and 2 making chocolate crispy cakes.

Romero Catholic Academy’s catering team helped guide children through the food preparation, before delivering the packages to Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire, which enables people who have experienced or been at risk of homelessness to receive support and be part of a community.

Ingredients were by provided by a range of suppliers including Coventry-based Freshest Fruit and Vegetables and Rylance Foods, which supplied the ingredients for the crispy cakes and sausage rolls.

Megan Scullion, Principal at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School, said: "We’re so proud of our pupils for their compassion and enthusiasm in supporting such an important cause again this Christmas.

“Taking part in this initiative with Emmaus is a wonderful way for children to understand the value of giving back to the community, especially during the festive season."

Marcus Chilvers, Head of Catering at the Romero Catholic Academy, said: "It’s fantastic to see the pupils so engaged in this hands-on project to help those in need.

“Supporting Emmaus continues to be a meaningful tradition for us, and it also gives the children a chance to develop practical skills while making a real difference in the local community."
