Con McHugh is a parishioner of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. He is working on a video project as part of the Jubilee Year.

Over the coming months a series of short videos by Con will explore each of the Jubilee themes:

Care for Creation, Food Poverty, Modern Slavery, Managing Debt, Forgiveness, Rest and Worship.

In the second video - Modern Slavery - we hear from Ben Ryan, Deputy CEO for the Medaille Trust.

Ben talks about Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking and the role of the Medaille Trust as a provider of survivor support services.

He reflects on the way Jubilee has always involved the liberation from bondage and captivity and how that relates to the challenge today of rebuilding survivors caught up in the evils of trafficking and modern slavery.

It is estimated the UK is home to over 120,000 potential victims of slavery. Worldwide there are 50 million potential victims.

The Medaille Trust exists to provide refuge and freedom from modern slavery. They are one of the leading providers of survivor support services in the UK, including through safe houses and community projects.

One of Medaille's awareness projects in recent years has included the Look Up campaign in partnership with the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

So this Jubilee year Medaille are asking people to hold victims in their prayers, to learn the signs of modern slavery and to know how to respond if there are cases in your parish, your school and your community.

They are also asking for help – the work to rebuild people needs new supporters. Champions who will campaign for better protections. Volunteers and staff who can sit with and help the task of rebuilding lives. And supporters and funders who can help us to elevate the work and expand it.
