A serious earthquake has hit Myanmar, in an area that has already been affected by conflict.

There is limited information on the impact of this earthquake, but buildings have been damaged in neighbouring Thailand, so it is likely to be devastating.

CAFOD has opened the Myanmar Earthquake Appeal online

Please donate to the Appeal to provide water, food, solar lights, mosquito nets and water purification tablets to those devastated by this disaster.

Your generosity will extend far and wide and will help the Catholic Church in Myanmar bring comfort and relief to families who are in urgent need.

Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, Archbishop of Yangon and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar, spoke to Vatican News on 28 March, after witnessing the earthquake himself while in a vehicle on the road near the capital, Nay Pyi Taw. He said:

“We are deeply touched by the promise of support by the Catholic Church everywhere. The people need food, shelter, medicine, and all life-saving materials.”

Cardinal Bo also said that the “Church’s personnel and religious groups would be the best channel to bring assistance” to those in need.

Prayer for the people of Myanmar

Please join us in praying for the people of Myanmar and other affected areas.

God of mercy,
we pray for all people
affected by the earthquake in Myanmar.

Enfold them in your love
and console them in their grief
as they mourn the death of loved ones
and the destruction of their homes.

Strengthen and guide all those
responding to this disaster
as they seek to bring comfort and relief
in this time of sorrow and pain.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,
whose love endures forever,
Amen.
