Hundreds of faithful from across the Archdiocese of Birmingham gathered yesterday at Harvington Hall, the Shrine of the English Martyrs, for the annual pilgrimage—a celebration of faith, history, and resilience. Despite early showers, the skies cleared just in time for the outdoor Mass, allowing pilgrims to unite in prayer beneath the watchful gaze of the historic Hall.

The pilgrimage, an annual tradition in the Archdiocese, commemorates the courage and sacrifice of Catholic martyrs who upheld their faith during centuries of persecution. This year’s Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Bernard Longley, whose homily offered a stirring reflection on the enduring legacy of the martyrs and the spiritual significance of Harvington Hall.

“We’ve come trusting as pilgrims of hope during the jubilee year to honour the memory of our English martyrs,” Archbishop Longley said. “The record of faithfulness that endured suffering… the record of love that was stronger than death.”

He paid tribute to the Hall’s role as a sanctuary for priests and laypeople alike, noting its hidden chapels and famed priest holes—some crafted by St Nicholas Owen—that sheltered those who risked everything to keep the flame of Catholic faith alive.

Many pilgrims had toured the Hall earlier in the day, exploring its architectural secrets and reflecting on its spiritual heritage. The Hall’s mullioned windows served as silent witnesses to the day’s events, echoing centuries of quiet resistance and devotion.

In his homily, Archbishop Longley reminded pilgrims of their own call to bear witness:
“We live our faith and celebrate Mass in continuity with those who sacrificed their security and well-being… for the sacrifice of the Mass, which we can offer today without fear or intimidation.”

The Mass honoured 16 martyrs associated with the local church, including St John Wall, Blessed Edward Oldcorne, Blessed Arthur Bell, and St Nicholas Owen. Their stories, etched into the very stones of Harvington Hall, continue to inspire generations of believers.

As the pilgrimage concluded, pilgrims departed, carrying with them the Archbishop’s final blessing and a shared commitment to live their faith boldly in today’s world:

“May our recollections of this day… always be a source of spiritual encouragement, especially in the year ahead. Martyrs of England and Wales, pray for us.”

With grateful thanks to Con McHugh for the photography and videography.
