Living as a Catholic Become a Catholic Testimony: My Journey of Faith and Belonging Manisha Kumari In the quiet suburb of Erdington, nestled just a few minutes' walk from my home, stands the Abbey Church, a place that would become the cornerstone of my spiritual journey. Born into a Hindu family, I never truly embraced any particular faith, drifting through life with a sense of spiritual ambiguity. Seven years ago, I moved to Erdington, unaware that this change in scenery would lead to a profound transformation. My partner, a devoted Catholic, often attended services at the Abbey Church. Initially, I accompanied them out of support, not expecting the impact these visits would have on me. Each time I entered the church, I was enveloped by a sense of peace and tranquillity that was unfamiliar yet comforting. The rhythmic cadence of the prayers and the warmth of the community began to resonate with me, planting the seeds of curiosity and introspection. Life took a significant turn when I became pregnant. With this new chapter came a myriad of worries and uncertainties. In search of solace, I found myself drawn more deeply into the embrace of the church. It was during this time that I realised I had found where I truly belonged a place where my heart felt at home and my spirit at ease. The Abbey Church community welcomed me with open arms, offering a sense of belonging that I had longed for. Their kindness and support were unwavering, making me feel like a cherished member of their family, I decided to have my son baptised when he arrived in to the world. This connection also solidified my decision to embark on the journey to become baptised as a Catholic myself. In 2024, I began the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) under the guidance of Father Kieran. Initially, he directed me to another church to start my sessions. However, after attending a few, I realised that the sense of community I cherished at the Abbey was missing. I decided to wait for the RCIA program to become available at the Abbey Church, trusting that this was where my spiritual path was meant to unfold. Since then, my learning journey with Father Gideon has been nothing short of transformative. His open and honest approach to teaching has enriched my understanding of Catholicism, deepening my faith and commitment. The course, though intense and condensed into a few months, has been a testament to the dedication of both the church and its students. Together, we have forged a bond that promises a future filled with spiritual growth and fulfilment. As I stand on the threshold of becoming a true Catholic, I reflect on the path that led me here a journey marked by discovery, acceptance, and love. The Abbey Church has not only become a place of worship but a sanctuary where I found peace, community, and a renewed sense of purpose. I look forward to the day of my baptism, knowing that I am embracing a faith that has welcomed me with open arms and a heart full of hope. Erdington Abbey website Manage Cookie Preferences
